"Blended" Movie Starring Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore is a Romantic Comedy With Surprising Charm
Following in the footsteps of 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are back at it again in this summer's romantic comedy Blended. In the film, Sandler and Barrymore play single parents trying to do it all (and failing in some truly priceless ways). After a single, horrible blind date with each other, the two find themselves unexpectedly face-to-face on an African paradise getaway. Their families then enjoy a Brady Bunch-like romp, as they loathe each other while gradually learning that they actually enjoy one another.
Unlike many of Sandler's recent attempts at comedy, Blended is surprisingly heartwarming and careful. It is fearless in its attempt to portray single-parent life, complete with Sandler raising three daughters and Barrymore with two sons, experiencing the ups and downs of adolescence without the usual gross-out moments viewers have come to expect from the typical Sandler movie.
Its unconventional location (an African safari resort, rather than the beaches of Maui or the streets of New York) gives this film a refreshing new twist on the traditional family-vacation tale. Sandler and Barrymore's undeniable chemistry, resurrected from their 50 First Dates days, also lends a charm and authenticity to this film that many of Sandler's recent films lack.
In the most predictable way possible, Barrymore's sons (who are in desperate need of a decent father figure) and Sandler's daughters (who sport truly terrible fashion sense thanks to their inept father) bond as their parents get to experience parenting of a different style while cavorting amongst elephants and rhinos. This movie does not shock and awe its audience; rather, it permits the audience to settle in for a predictable, yet tasteful and at times incredibly poignant, story.
